No Alternative to Sustainability: Why Tools Like Planet Positive Event Are the Future of Event Planning

In this insightful interview, Neda Lušić, Sustainability Coordinator at the Association of Croatian Travel Agencies, shares her perspective on the growing importance of sustainability in the MICE industry. She highlights how tools like Planet Positive Event (PPE) support the shift toward transparent, efficient, and ESRS-aligned event management. Lušić sees PPE as a game-changer that empowers both agencies and clients to drive real transformation. She also discusses the challenges event organizers face—especially with data integration, regulatory complexity, and resource limitations—and stresses the critical role assessors play in guiding the way. Looking ahead, she predicts that sustainability will become non-negotiable for survival in the market, with smart tools, strong ESG principles, and proactive education leading the charge.
How did you first hear about Planet Positive Event?
I first heard about the Planet Positive Event project via newsletters from Toleranca Marketing, Kongres Magazine as well as professional networks related to the MICE industry. I learned more about innovative Planet Positive Event tool during a workshop held in April 2025 in Zagreb.
What made you interested in becoming an internal/external assessor?
I see the development of the PPE tool as an important step forward in the field of event sustainability management and certification. It is equally important for event agencies and their clients as it enables them to plan and organize events transparently, responsibly and efficiently. The PPE tool enables sustainable transformation both internally and externally and this is where I see its great advantage compared to some other tools available on the market. Becoming an internal assessor is an opportunity to further develop and upgrade existing knowledge and experience.
How do you understand the significance of the ESRS standards?
ESRS represent a significant step forward in the harmonisation of sustainability reporting practices. By providing single set of standards, the ESRS ensures that sustainability information is consistent, comparable, and reliable. In this way, greater transparency and accountability among businesses is strengthened. More and more businesses across the EU and beyond apply ESRS. As a result, we can expect greater focus on sustainable development, more informed decision-making, and ultimately, a more sustainable and resilient economy in the EU and beyond.
Can you explain how the adoption of ESRS standards will impact your work in the future?
The application of ESRS standards is a complex process and it will certainly affect the way we’ll plan and organize our events in the future, how effectively we’ll integrate the principles of sustainability. There are many factors at play and need to be taken into account, including the appropriate resources, knowledge, experience and tools that companies will have at their disposal. The implementation of the ESRS will significantly reshape the business landscape in the tourism industry, especially in MICE sector. The role of tourism associations like ours is to help its members along the way.
What features could be added to improve the PPE’s platform value to event organizers? (if you have tried the demo version)
I haven’t tried the demo version of PPE yet. Given that it was created by top event industry experts, I expect PPE already provide solid support and practical solutions for planning sustainable events. In further developing the PPE tool, it would certainly be useful to offer as much supporting materials as possible (education, templates, guidelines, best practices etc.)
What challenges do you anticipate event organizers facing when aligning with ESRS standards, and how can assessors assist in overcoming them?
ESRS demands high-quality, accurate, and timely data from various parts, ranging from financials to environmental performance metrics. One of the foremost challenges is the integration of diverse data sources from various parts into a unified reporting system. ESRS implementation will in some cases require significant changes in organizational culture. Also, many companies face limitations in their staff resources (capacity, training and skill gaps) and technological infrastructure. Understanding and integrating complex regulatory requirements should also be taken into account. Assessors can help by providing guidance, expert support and coaching.
How do you see Planet Positive Event helping event organizers align with the ESRS standards?
As the authors of the tool point out, PPE offers all-in-one solution. With a structured and integrated approach, the tool enables event organizers to effectively manage and report on sustainability in accordance with ESRS requirements, regardless of the size and production complexity of the event.
How do you envision the future of sustainability practices in the events industry, particularly with tools like Planet Positive Event?
Sustainability is a concern for all of us. Consumers and business partners alike expect companies to contribute. Sustainability is an integral part of event management. That’s a fact that event organizers must keep in mind. There is no alternative if you want to survive in the market. In doing so, the implementation of tools like PPE is extremely important. I hope that its benefits will be recognized by an increasing number of event organizers.
What do you think are the key trends or innovations that will shape sustainability in event planning over the next few years?
New technologies and smart tools will emerge and play a significant role, making things easier for event organizers. Stakeholder expectations for responsible resource sourcing and management (procurement, supply chain), waste reduction and carbon offset options will continue to grow. Sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles are integral part of event management.
What advice would you give to event organizers just beginning their sustainability journey?
Don’t postpone your journey towards sustainable business. Research & educate yourself, strengthen your capacities, knowledge and skills in the field of sustainability. Tools like PPE can be of great help. Encourage your partners and clients to follow the same path. Talk about your efforts and inform the wider public about your key achievements in the field of sustainability and company social responsibility.
